St. Nicholas Something Russian Festival

Tuesday, October 1 - 10:00 AM

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Mogadore will host its annual Something Russian Festival, Tuesday-Wednesday, October 1-2, 2019.  The festival opens at 10 a.m. and ends at 9 p.m. both days.  The two-day event, celebrating Russian food, music, dance and art, draws more than 5,000 visitors from throughout Northeast Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and the surrounding area each year.

Ethnic lunches and dinners are available to eat at the church social hall or for take-out.  Ethnic specialties such as chicken Kiev, peroghis and poonchki top the list of festival favorites.  Other menu items include homemade halupki (stuffed cabbage rolls), halushki, blini, borscht, traditional potato pancakes, grilled Cevapcici (sausage filled with beef, pork and spices) and a delectable variety of fresh baked goods including nut, poppy seed and apricot rolls, kiffle, paschas and much more.  Visitors are also invited to experience the old-world atmosphere in the festival’s tearoom and enjoy one of the varieties of authentic imported teas.

In the festival’s cultural tent, the St. Nicholas Balalaika Orchestra and the St. Nicholas Russian Youth Dancers, dressed in colorful, traditional costumes, will give several live performances in the evenings on both days of the festival with balalaika ensembles playing throughout the afternoons.

The festival also offers a spectacular assortment of Russian nesting dolls (Matroshkas), imported carvings and holiday gift items; Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter egg supplies and one-of-a-kind eggs), icons and other religious gifts available for purchase.

Church parishioners will be on hand to provide guided tours of the beautiful church and to answer questions about the Orthodox Christian faith. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see the church’s beautiful iconography and learn more about the importance of iconography in the Orthodox church.

Proceeds from the Something Russian Festival not only benefit St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, but also its many outreach programs and numerous projects that support the mission of the Orthodox community both locally and abroad.
