An Evening with Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess

Monday, January 17 - 7:00 PM

On Monday, January 17 at 7 p.m. the Hudson Library & Historical Society will host a live virtual streaming event with Ann Wolbert Burgess, author of A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind. In her memoir, Burgess, a forensic nurse, shares the story of how her pioneering research on sexual assault and trauma transformed the way the FBI studies, profiles, and catches serial killers. Burgess will be in conversation with her co-author, Steven Matthew Considine.

In response to a large uptick in the number of reported cases of sexual assault and homicide in the United States in the 1970’s and 1980’s the FBI created the Behavioral Science Unit, also called the Mindhunters, a specialized team charged with tracking down the country’s most dangerous criminals. Burgess’s research came to their attention and over the course of the next two decades, she helped the budding unit identify, interview, and track down dozens of notoriously violent offenders. In her book Burgess shares the investigations as she experienced them, interweaving interview transcripts and crime scene drawings alongside her own vivid recollections to provide unprecedented insight into the minds of deranged criminals and the victims they left behind. Along the way, she also paints a revealing portrait of a formidable institution on the brink of a seismic scientific and cultural reckoning, and the men forced to reconsider everything they thought they knew about crime.

Burgess is a leading forensic and psychiatric nurse who worked with the FBI for over two decades. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Science and is currently a professor of psychiatric mental health nursing at the Boston College Connell School of Nursing.
