Description:

Heresies: A Retrospective by Pedro Meyer

December 6, 2008 – February 22, 2009

The Akron Art Museum will be one of 59 museums in 25 countries (including 12 museums in the United States) participating in Pedro Meyer’s Heresies project.  This unique, multi-institution retrospective presents four decades of groundbreaking work by this important contemporary Mexican photographer during fall and winter 2008. The curator at each host institution selects the images to be shown at that museum.  The Akron exhibition will feature eleven large-scale photographs and a video component.

Pedro Meyer is renowned both for his powerful and provocative photographs and for his pioneering work with digital imaging. Meyer’s often expressed contention that all photographs—digitally manipulated or not—are equally "true" and "untrue" has been labeled "heretical" in the orthodox documentary photography community. This has given rise to the exhibition’s title, Heresies.
