Description:

The museum has teamed up with two downtown neighbors, the Akron-Summit County Public Library and Summit Artspace, to present a full, diverse schedule of FREE programs and activities on the first Sunday of every month, appropriately titled Sunday Sampler.
Museum
At the museum, open from 11 am - 5 pm, the following activities will take place:
Akros Percussion Collective presents Karlheinz Stockhausen's Musik im Bauch (Music in the Belly), 1 pm - With surreal qualities that compliment the Nuclear Enchantment: Photographs by Patrick Nagatani exhibition, influential, avant garde German composer Stockhausen’s scenic composition was inspired by sounds gurgling in his two-year-old daughter’s tummy and a subsequent dream. First-come, first-serve seating. This program is presented with generous support from the Kathy and Sam Salem Philanthropic Fund.
Gallery Talk: Nuclear Enchantment: Photographs by Patrick Nagatani with exhibition curator Barbara Tannenbaum, 2:30 pm - Join the museum’s Director of Curatorial Affairs for a lively and informative discussion of Nagatani’s surreal, dream-like photographic images.
All activities are FREE. As always on the first Sunday of each month, admission into the galleries is free as well.
Library
Across the street at the library, which is open from 1 - 5 pm, the story of Akron's famous historic resident and abolitionist comes to life in the Special Collections Department's John Brown artifacts exhibition. The exhibition is part of the community’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), and his December 2, 1859 execution. Throughout the day, teens can visit the third floor Teen Division for Crafts to Go projects and families with young children can enjoy Sunday Story Time Sampler in the Children’s Library at 2 pm. Also at 2 pm, the Manchester Dance Ensemble will perform in the auditorium.
Summit Artspace
Summit Artspace, located two blocks east of the museum at the corner of Market and Summit, is open from 11 am – 5 pm and features the fifth annual juried show Fresh and Witty. The Akron Society of Artists will be conducting tours, artists will be demonstrating from 12 – 2 pm and an Artist Meet & Greet will take place from 2 – 4 pm in the What’s New? exhibition featuring new work by local artists. Refreshments, an artwork sale and door prize drawing add to the fun.
Trolley Transportation
In addition to the fun activities, free trolley transportation will be provided by the City of Akron between 12 – 5 pm. Each month the trolley will stop at a different community center, picking up visitors every half hour starting at 12 pm and taking them to the art museum. The last community center pick up is at 3 pm. The last return trip to the community center leaves the art museum at 4:45 pm. In November, meet the trolley at the Lawton Street Community Center, 1225 Lawton Street, in Akron.
