California as Muse: The Art of Arthur & Lucia Mathews
Every Tuesday thru Sunday June September 7, 2008:
This exhibition represents the rediscovery of Arthur (1860-1945) and Lucia Mathews (1870-1955), leaders of both Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts style in California and creators of luminous paintings, stylish furniture and dazzling decorative objects. The San Francisco-based husband and wife each used a rich color palette, sinuous lines and stylized floral motifs. In addition to their landscape paintings and images of women in nature, the exhibition includes tables, desks, frames, screens, lamps, candlesticks and vases that the couple designed at the Furniture Shop, their studio in downtown San Francisco from 1906 to 1920. This exhibition was organized by The Oakland Museum of California. The presentation in Akron is made possible by major sponsorship from Akron Community Foundation and the David H. & Barbara M. Jacobs Foundation with generous support from Merrill Lynch.
