My Song in the Night

Event Type(s): Arts / Theatre / Music, Other
Organization: Singers Companye
Description: Singers Companye to offer an exciting Spring concert

Singers Companye, Akron’s chamber choir, will present a stunning concert that features mostly American sacred works on Sunday, April 23. The performance will be at Faith Lutheran Church, 2726 W. Market Street in Akron at 4 PM. Samuel Gordon conducts. My Song in the Night is open to the public at no admission charge. A free-will offering will be taken.
Purcell’s breathtaking Soul of the World from his Ode, Hail, Bright Cecelia will open the program. Eighteenth-century composer, Padre Giovanni Martini, has the spotlight in the next section that features his sparkling Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina, an exciting favorite from one of Singers Companye’s early concert seasons.
The second part of the program features prize-winning American choral composers. The choir will offer two of the five movements from Dan Forrest’s cycle, Words from Paradise, each based on one word from the Bible. A rich tapestry of Latin settings follows including: a setting of The Lord’s Prayer by Alejandro Consolacion, a new work, Caritas, by Rome Prize winner, Mark Kilstofte and richly colored a cappella motet, Ecce dedi verba mea, by Richard Burchard. Rounding out the listening experience will be Cecil Sharpe’s Laudate nomen for choir and organ and Paul Christiansen’s setting of the Southern folk hymn, My Song in the Night (from which the program theme comes). Works by Antonio Estevez, Rene Clausen, and Craig Hella Johnson end the program. Amy Sauriol, pianist and Robert Mollard, organist are featured.
